Calm’s flagship 6-day Community Mediator training programme teaches the context and skills required for competent practice as a community mediator. It’s a solid opportunity to learn new skills along with the possibility of putting them into practice.
Our 2025 cohort – who gathered for class at Birkbeck University – showcased one of the best things about mediators…the broad range of people and backgrounds. The course was delivered by Calm’s leading Mediators Freddie De Luca an Mirka Wojnar and Richard Hills.
Starting with ‘what is conflict?’, we considered the positive potential as well as the commonly perceived negative scenarios. Words associated with ‘conflict’ can include ‘empowering’ & ‘creative’!
By Day 2 the group were doing their first skills practice, building from there each day to enable a ‘full mediation’ (shortened timeframes) practice before their Practical Assessment on Day 6 – congratulations to each of them on becoming a certified Community Mediator!
Most of the cohort are now completing the written Portfolio essays to (hopefully) become Accredited, as our course is moderated by Open College Network, to enable a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification.
The best bit is that many new Community Mediators – from this course and from the Community Conversion 1 day course in January – will be joining our 100+ existing volunteers to get immediate co-mediation practice, while actively supporting conflict resolution for neighbours across London.
We look forward to seeing them at our monthly Skills Development Sessions (2-3 hours each) which are open to everyone interested in conflict resolution..
Learning new skills or developing existing is useful in many different contexts. Do get in touch if you’d like to know more: training@calmmediation.org
