Calm Mediation is delighted to have been invited to join the advisory board to the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on RJ. The APPG was established in April 2021. The advisory board, formed of leading stakeholders involved in the research or delivery of restorative practices in the UK, was tasked with supporting and advising it.
The APPG’s objectives are:
- To examine the use of restorative justice principles within the UK justice system and beyond
- To raise the profile of restorative justice principles within Parliament
- To provide opportunities for policy discussion and consultation.
A key part of the APPG’s work programme is to conduct an inquiry to review the current status of RJ, identify good practice and areas for improvement. The inquiry’s oral and written evidence gathering sessions took place over the summer.
The APPG has now published its Inquiry Report which makes nine key recommendations to the Government for consideration.
Among notable recommendations were:
- The assigning of a Government minister with specific responsibility for restorative justice
- The publication of a new action plan to improve awareness of, access to and capacity for restorative justice
- More and better public communications about RJ.
