Calm Mediation is celebrating Restorative Justice (RJ) Week through a series of activities, joining fellow experts and practitioners at the RJC 2024 Annual Conference. This week, Calm Mediation is also taking RJ training into the community, including sessions for new recruits at Peckham Police Station and prisoners at HMP Thameside, demonstrating the transformative power and practice of RJ.
Ahead of these community visits, Julie Clark, Calm’s Restorative Justice Service Manager, shared her reflections on the RSC 2024 conference.
Julie noted that the conference featured many informative sessions. One of her highlights was a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges of RJ in policing, led by Dr. Jon Hobson. She was particularly inspired by the Metropolitan Police’s passionate engagement with RJ, aligning closely with Calm Mediation’s values and vision. Julie emphasized the importance of this shared purpose in transforming the use of RJ in policing.
“We’ve built a strong and effective partnership with the Met over the past five years, and they will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the future of RJ in London,” Julie said.
The conference, Julie added, brought together the RJ community and the most important people – those with lived experience– and created a space for sharing ideas, experiences, and challenges, all with the shared goal of embedding restorative practices in communities, schools, workplaces, and the criminal justice system.
Calm Mediation, a partner of the London Victim and Witness Service, has been delivering Restorative Justice to Londoners since 2006, working across the capital to help reshape justice through empathy and dialogue.
