Inter-generational and family members mediation

We support people (adult siblings, parents, children, in-laws, grandparents) to find a way through all kinds of family conflict situations. This includes inter-generational and extended family situations.

Our mediators ensure that everyone has a voice to achieve greater clarity, generate options and agree how to move forward. Some of the issues we work with most often include:

Communication breakdown
Estrangement
Lifestyle/ values/ personality differences
Problem behaviour

How can mediation help in family situations?

Mediation can be an effective method of resolving conflicts within families. It is an informal, voluntary process that enables you to find a mutually agreed solution in a safe and confidential setting.

With the help of neutral mediators, you can achieve understanding, peace of mind and a clear way forward. Mediation works in a way which tends to preserve or improve relationships between family members. It is a step-by-step process:

Step 1

A short call with our office team: we'll explain mediation and answer questions or concerns.

Step 2

Private introductory meetings (IM) - 1 hour with each client. We'll hear your perspective and prepare for the next step.

Step 3

Joint meeting (JM) – 2-3 hours. We'll enable listening and discussion, and help you find options that everyone can accept for the future.

We understand how challenging family conflict can be. Calm Mediation will ensure that you have two mediators supporting everyone throughout the process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact us to discuss this. We can help you to make an approach to other family members.

In a nutshell, our charges are per person and in three stages.

Stage 1: £50 admin fee to engage with all the clients and hopefully set up the IMs.

Stage 2: £100 per person for the IMs (couples may be one charge, depending on the nature of their engagement).

Stage 3: £200 per person for the JM (couples may be one charge, depending on the nature of their engagement).

There may be an additional cost e.g. for a neutral venue or travel beyond the M25, agreed in advance.

This kind of mediation often requires more than one meeting. The mediators will help you to agree next steps at the end of each meeting.

We have a panel of experienced mediators. They come from diverse backgrounds and are of all ages. All have been accredited by reputable bodies and go through our own training and induction process to work as Calm mediators. Two mediators will support you throughout what can be an emotional process.

Yes, we can support young people to sort out conflict situations. Please get in touch.

We also have an award-winning Peer Mediation service which works in schools and colleges. Students are trained and supported to provide mediation for their peers. Participating schools report benefits for the whole school community. See our Peer Mediation page for more information.

Why choose family mediation over going to court?

Fantastic Return on Investment

Mediation is low cost in comparison to legal methods. It is also quick and simple to review when there are life changes, such as moving to a different area, change of schools, etc.

Effective

Mediation can take as little as two and half hours of your time in total and could resolve disputes that have been ongoing for years. It is voluntary and confidential, supporting clients to find realistic solutions that are agreeable to both.

Exceptional Experience

Our Senior Mediator has been offering family mediation full time since 2015. Three additional mediators also work to the highest standards. Our service is supported by teams in other conflict resolution areas, with an exceptional depth of knowledge, developed since 1986.

Skilled Mediators

Our practitioners undergo regular training, development, and supervision to support their practice. They follow the Codes of Practice of the Family Mediation Council and are strictly regulated by the Legal Aid Agency (for LA cases).
