Calm Mediation and Eastern Education Group have developed a new partnership to train and support student mediators at colleges in Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich. The partnership is based on Calm Mediation’s award winning Peer Mediation Service that currently operates at Bacon’s College and Goldsmith’s University in South East London and Exning Primary School in Suffolk.
From September 2024, Calm Mediation will support Eastern Education Group to recruit, train and develop student mediators at West Suffolk College in Bury St Edmunds, before moving on to One Sixth Form College in Ipswich later in the year. Students will receive mediation skills training from Calm Mediation’s team of accredited mediators, led by its Peer Mediation Manager Mel Bruce, who has trained and developed peer mediators in educational settings for more than 24 years.
All students who pass a post-training mediation skills assessment will then help to run a professionally managed peer mediation service at each of the colleges. This will be a confidential and impartial service that is delivered by students to resolve disputes between their student peers. Calm Mediation will advise on the setting up of systems of case management and allocation and will provide weekly supervision sessions to support the ongoing learning and development of student mediators.
Interested in finding out more about Peer Mediation in educational settings?
Calm Mediation’s award winning peer mediation scheme provides training, support and supervision of young people within an educational setting, to mediate conflicts between other students involving issues such as bullying, fighting, social media issues, rumours, fall-outs among friends, exclusion and disputes involving teachers, parents and family.
Peer mediation has three main aims:
(i) transform behaviour, culture and performance in schools and other educational settings;
(ii) improve mental health and wellbeing of young people; and
(iii) realise the ambition of young people by teaching practical communication, listening and negotiation skills that help them become good citizens, employees, partners and friends.
